Take HD even further. The 1080p STR-DH500 5.1-channel A/V receiver delivers one robust HD experience, with HDMI™ pass-through and 1080/24p capability, it's compatible with the latest HD sources like Blu-ray Disc™ players, PLAYSTATION®3 and more. But the connectivity doesn't stop there. You also have access to five HD inputs for even greater versatility. Finally, the STR-DH500 includes the Digital Media Port, which allows you to extend your music selection from an iPod®, Walkman® digital music player, Bluetooth® device or from a PC (accessories sold separately).

I've had my Sony receiver for 11 years, without a problem, and always great sound (especially with my Klipsch quintet speakers and Mirage subwoofer.) This may be the one to replace it though. I have no need for more than 5 surround speakers and a woofer, but I do need HDMI pass through with plenty of inputs.

Features
  • Channel Power Rating: 100W x 5 Amp Power (8 ohms, THD 1.0%)
  • 5 HD Inputs compatible with HD video: The STR-DH500 has ample HD connections compatible with various HD signals. Being the central hub of your audio and video sources, the STR-DH500 ensures seamless compatibility with today's demanding HD sources.
  • HD Film Quality with 24p TRUE CINEMA: Most of all Hollywood movies are shot at 24 frames per second, and Blu-ray Disc™ movies are mastered at 24 frame per second, so it is only fitting that the STR-DH500can output your films at 1080/24p for a true film-like experience at home.
  • Multi Function Audio Input: Sony's DIGITAL MEDIA PORT plays back music from various audio sources whether it is stored on an iPod, Walkman, Bluetooth device or PC.
  • Quick Speaker Set Up: An ideal listening experience is only a button away. Simply place the included microphone in your listening position, push a single button and speaker placement, distance and delays are automatically adjusted.

New Robot to Dispense Medicine, Find Sarah Connor

Panasonic Unveils Robotic Drug Dispenser

Panasonic More about Panasonic said Tuesday has developed a medical robot that dispenses drugs to patients, the Japanese electronics giant's first step into robotics.

Panasonic will sell the robot to Japanese hospitals next March and will market it in the United States and Europe later. Panasonic spokesperson Akira Kadota said the robot will cost several tens of millions of yen (hundreds of thousands of US dollars).

"This robot is the first in our robotics project. It sorts out injection drugs to patients, saving time for pharmacists," said Kadota.

More Artoo Than Threepio

The robot does not look humanoid. "It looks like a cabinet with lots of small drawers," he said.

Pharmacists put drugs into the robot, which stores medical data for patients. The robot will then sort out drugs for each patient and place them into respective drawers bearing the names of patients.

Osaka-based Panasonic hopes annual revenue from the robot and other medical robotics will reach 30 billion yen ($315 million) in the financial year to March 2016.

Robo Nation

Japan boasts one of the leading robotics industries in the world, and the government is pushing to develop the industry as a road to growth. Automaker Honda Motor has developed the child-sized Asimo, which can walk and talk.

Earlier this year, the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology, a government-backed organization, revealed a walking, talking robot with a female face. However, it hasn't cleared safety standards and cannot yet help humans with daily chores.

Barnes & Noble Stores to Provide Free Wi-Fi

Barnes & Noble customers have had access to paid Wi-Fi hotspots at individual outlets of the popular nationwide bookseller since 2005. The company announced Tuesday, however, that it has signed a strategic agreement with AT&T to implement free and unlimited access to all of its 777 stores' wireless networks.

This move seems to be intended, at least in part, to help support the Barnes & Noble's ever-expanding eBook initiative. We reviewed Barnes & Noble's new eReader application last week, and this move seems like an excellent way to keep the company's enormous list of titles at the forefront of everyone's minds. Giving everyone with a wireless device instant access to preview and download over 700,000 eBook titles, including hundreds of thousands of additional public-domain selections from Google, is a terrific marketing tool.

And this strategy doesn't end there. Customers who opt in will also be able to receive special offers and useful information directly over the network. The company is currently suggesting such things as coupons to in-store cafés, information on book signings, and specific instructions on how to find new releases as being among the potential benefits for customers.

Study: Texts while driving even more dangerous

BLACKSBURG, Va. -

Texting while driving increases the risk of a crash much more than previous studies have concluded with motorists taking their eyes off the road longer than they do when talking or listening on their cell phones, a safety research institute said Monday.

The Virginia Tech Transportation Institute used cameras to continuously observe light vehicle drivers and truckers for more than 6 million miles. It found that when drivers of heavy trucks texted, their collision risk was 23 times greater than when not texting.

Dialing a cell phone and using or reaching for an electronic device increased risk of collision about 6 times in cars and trucks.

Recent research using driving simulators suggested that talking and listening were as dangerous as texting, but the "naturalistic driving studies clearly indicate that this is not the case," a news release from the institute said. The risks of texting generally applied to all drivers, not just truckers, the researchers said. Complete results were expected to be released Tuesday.

Right before a crash or near collision, drivers spent nearly five seconds looking at their devices, which was enough time at 55 mph to cover more than the length of a football field.

"Talking/listening to a cell phone allowed drivers to maintain eyes on the road and were not associated with an increased safety risk to nearly the same degree," the institute said. "These results show conclusively that a real key to significantly improving safety is keeping your eyes on the road."

The institute recommended that texting should be banned for all drivers and all cell phone use should be prohibited for newly licensed teen drivers. Fourteen states do ban texting while driving.

The study also concluded that headset cell phone use is not substantially safer than hand-held because the primary risks associated with both are answering, dialing, and other tasks that take drivers' eyes off the road.

Voice activated systems are less risky if they are designed well enough so drivers do not have to take their eyes off the road often or for long periods.

A call to the institute was not immediately returned Monday night for more details.
